Costa Nostrum, a certification standard for the sustainable management and development of the beaches in the Mediterranean, recently signed a cooperation agreement with the Institute of Oceanography of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (ΕLKETHE). Operating under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Greek Education Ministry, ELKETHE conducts scientific research for the protection of the hydrosphere, its organisms and interface with the atmosphere; the coast and the sea bottom; the physical, chemical, biological and geological conditions that prevail; and regulate the aforementioned systems. Through its collaboration with Costa Nostrum, ELKETHE aims to preserve and promote nautical and sustainable tourism; sustainable beaches; maritime economy; the coastal and marine environment. “In times of crisis, the connection and close cooperation of educational and research bodies and companies for a common cause such as the protection of the coastal environment and the development of sustainable tourism… are considered a necessity for businesses and society,” Costa Nostrum said in an announcement. Costa Nostrum and ELKETHE will also work towards achieving “Blue Growth”, the European Commission’s long-term strategy that aims to support sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors. The objectives of the new partnership were recently presented during an event on the island of Crete.
