Event News Posidonia 2020 to Focus on Environmental Policies and Impact by GTP editing team 19 February 2020 written by GTP editing team 19 February 2020 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 9 The implementation of environmental policies and their impact will be at the center of one of the largest maritime events, the Posidonia 2020 to take place during June 1-5 at the Athens Metropolitan Expo. With over 2,000 exhibitors from 90 countries, thousands of international visitors, and key government officials and policy makers, organizers expect this year’s event to be the biggest ever. “The muscle of the Greek shipping sector serves as a ‘magnet’ attracting exhibitors from all over the world and is a key factor in the prolific deal-making activity that takes place throughout Posidonia week,” said Theodore Vokos, managing director of organizer Posidonia Exhibitions SA. The prestigious biennial event will focus on the newly implemented environmental regulations for the reduction of carbon emissions and the impact of the first six months of IMO 2020 – the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) low sulphur regulation. Other issues to be explored include the Greek shipping sector’s activity in newbuildings, fleet upgrades, new propulsion, as well as its growing drive for digitalization. “This year’s Posidonia Exhibition is taking place at a time that marks major changes in the global shipping industry,” said Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) President Theodore Veniamis referring to the implementation of the global sulphur cap on marine fuels, CO2 reduction measures, and climate change. “We have every confidence that Posidonia 2020 will once again provide a valuable platform for constructive discussions on such policy issues, in addition to the commercial and business goals they have been serving successfully over so many decades,” he added. Posidonia 2020 will include workshops and roundtables with the participation of industry executives, government officials, and regulators on a range of issues affecting the future of the industry. Parallel events this year will include the 1st Posidonia squash tournament, the Posidonia Cup Sailing Race, a ship soccer match, a running event and a golf tournament. Posidonia 2020 is organized under the auspices of the shipping ministry, the UGS, and the Hellenic Shipping Chamber with the support of the Piraeus municipality and the Greek Shipping Cooperation Committee.
