INSETE: Road Arrivals to Greece Up by 35.6% in January 2020

The number of arrivals by road to Greece increased in January by 35.6 percent to 625,600 compared to 462,000 in the same month a year ago.

More specifically, according to INSETE’s monthly bulletin, road arrivals grew by 92.9 percent to 151,529 through the Promachonas border point and by 114.8 percent to 115,834 via the Evzones border.

Traffic slowed down only at the Nymfaio border point by 28.4 percent to 50,551 road arrivals.

INSETE analysts attribute the increase in road arrivals through Greek borders to travelers from neighboring countries with the largest rises recorded from North Macedonia up by 90.8 percent in January 2020 to 149,020 against 78,102 in the same month in 2019; Bulgaria by 33.7 percent to 241,482 against 180,569; Turkey by 34.7 percent to 58,976 against 43,795; and Albania by 10.7 percent  to 176,221 compared to 159,119 in January a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the first month of 2020 also saw the number of inbound arrivals grow by 8.3 percent to 407,000 mainly through the airports of Athens (stronger by 5.6 percent) and Thessaloniki (16.9 percent).

Overall for 2019, INSETE informed that incoming tourist traffic increased by 1.2 million travelers, a 4.1 percent rise against 2019 to 31.3 million visitors, who generated a total of 18.2 billion euros in revenue for the year, up by 12.8 percent.
