Air Travel Athens Airport Sees Healthy Rise in Jan-Feb 2020 Traffic by GTP editing team 5 March 2020 written by GTP editing team 5 March 2020 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 9 Athens International Airport (AIA) continued its positive dynamic into 2020 achieving a 4.3 percent increase in incoming traffic during the January-February period, to 2.8 million passengers on the back of 25.5 million travelers it welcomed in 2019. More specifically, Athens Airport recorded an 8.3 percent rise in the number of foreign arrivals and a 4 percent decline in domestic traveler activity. For the month of February, incoming traffic rose by 2.8 percent to 1.36 million with the number of international passengers up by 6.4 percent to 941,000. Domestic travel marked a 4.5 percent slump compared to last year to 423,000 passengers, which aviation experts attribute to the decrease in the number of domestic flight services offered in the winter period. A total of 26,322 flights were carried out at AIA in the first two months of 2020, marking a 1.8 percent rise with international flights stronger by 7.4 percent against the same period last year and domestic flights down by 5.7 percent. Overall, AIA is performing well, according to tourism officials, given the coronavirus outbreak and its impact on travel worldwide. Indicatively, at least 26 airlines worldwide have cancelled flights due to Covid-19 among them British Airways, Ryanair, KLM, Scoot, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, EasyJet, United Airlines, Lufthansa, and Turkish Airlines.
