The pedestrian road stretching from the White Tower to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall since March 31 remained closed during most of the day and on weekends, as part of efforts to prevent overcrowding and contain the further spread of the coronavirus pandemic. “We don’t need to ban access to Thessaloniki’s – perhaps – most significant open space for longer, but general restrictions for unnecessary movements still apply,” Central Macedonia Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas said. He also called on residents to responsibly comply with the government’s guidelines, maintain safe distances among one another and follow the self-protective measures against COVID-19. “We can all enjoy the area without risking our health and the life of our fellow citizens,” he added. Greece has extended its lockdown until Monday, May 4, while Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday is expected to make announcements to the public regarding the government’s roadmap for the country to begin its return to normalcy.
