Photo: GTP Archaeological sites, monuments and museums across Greece on August 3 will host free cultural events to give residents and visitors the chance to admire and celebrate the August full moon. According to an announcement by the Culture Ministry, a total of 37 events will take place in Greece with free admission including concerts, theater and dance performances, poetry readings, documentary screenings, art exhibitions and stargazing events. For 2020, 2,500 years after the historic battles of Thermopylae and Salamina, Greece’s poster for the full moon celebrations depicts the hill of Kolonos on Mount Kallidromo, in Thermopylae. Seventy-seven Greek archaeological sites and museums will remain open until late at night on August 3, while another 40 sites will operate on longer hours. Only the Antirrion Fortress in Nafpaktos will host an event in the evening of August 2. All events will be carried out in accordance with the health and safety protocols set by Greek authorities for the operation of archaeological sites and museums to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The August full moon is celebrated annually with a number of events across Greece. In 2019, the country’s archaeological sites, museums and monuments welcomed over 60,000 visitors.
