The Greek Ministry of Citizen Protection will be stepping up enforcement to make sure all businesses on the island of Mykonos are complying with rules announced to curb the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19).

“We want to keep the island healthy and safe for every visitor and for the local community,” Citizens’ Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said on Wednesday during a meeting with local authorities on the island.

According to reports, the minister’s visit to Mykonos followed an uproar that was caused by so-called “corona-parties” taking place secretly on the island. Videos, showing mass private gatherings in villas and guests ignoring social distancing rules, recently surfaced and went viral on the Internet.

“Mykonos, at the moment, is safe from Covid-19. However, the dangers lurk and are before us every day”, the minister said, adding that the advise of health experts and the government’s safety protocols must be observed by islanders and entrepreneurs.

“Strict checks will be made by authorities so that together we can get out of this difficult period, which is so critical for employees, businesses, the Greek people and our country,” Minister Chrysochoidis said.

Moreover, the minister announced that 120 police officers have been added to the island’s force to deal with crime and any unlawful acts. Police patrols are scheduled to be more frequent in order to combat incidents of theft while a special focus will be shown on combating any drug trafficking networks on the island.

“Our goal is legality, to fight against crime. Our goal is social peace, development and prosperity of the island,” he said.

The minister’s safety plan for Mykonos also includes reducing road accidents through regular inspections of both drivers and car/motorcycle rental companies.

Minister Chrysochoidis will make a follow up visit to Mykonos soon to ensure that rules are being followed.
