COVID-19 Restarting Travel & Tourism in Greece Ferries in Greece are Now Allowed to Carry More Passengers by GTP editing team 2 August 2020 written by GTP editing team 2 August 2020 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 7 Following a review of the rules for safe ferry travel in Greece in the post-coronavirus (Covid-19) era, the government decided to allow Greek coastal shipping vessels to transfer more passengers on their routes in the country. According to a government decision, until August 31, ferries in Greece are now allowed to carry 80 percent (from 60 percent) of their maximum passenger capacity set by legislation. Ships that have cabins are allowed to transport 85 percent (from 65 percent) of their original passenger capacity. Passenger and crew cabins can now accommodate up to four people if they are first or second degree relatives, or people with disabilities with their escort. High-speed hydrofoils are allowed to carry 80 percent (from 50 percent) of their maximum passenger capacity but only if they have HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters and have certification that they have been installed and operate properly. According to Greece’s health protocol for travel by ferry, passengers are obliged to practice social distancing when on board and must wear face masks in indoor areas. Seating in airplane-type seats is allowed but not all are available for use for social distancing purposes. Port authority officials carry out regular inspections on board ferries traveling to the islands throughout the journey as well as at ports of departure and arrival. Passengers, captains and crew members are required, before boarding, during the journey and during disembarkation of the passengers, to comply with the measures announced for the prevention and treatment of coronavirus cases. Passengers and crew members found to be violating measures will be fined 150 euros. The violation fine for shipowners and captains is 1,000 euros.
