An announcement by the Elafonisos Municipality said that occupancy rates reached 80 percent during the last week of July, with the island hosting so far new and repeat visitors from France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Greece. The percentage is expected to reach 100 percent during August, considering that no extraordinary events will cause sudden cancellations, the municipality said. According to Elafonisos Mayor Efi Liarou, the island since June has been attracting many TV celebrities and therefore has appeared in many Greek and foreign media outlets. “Elafonisos brings visitors closer to nature. Our promotional strategy is based on this and we’ve managed to pass on the message to potential visitors at the right time,” she added. Elafonisos covers an area of 19 square kilometres (7 square miles). Many people visit the island for its light colored, sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.
