Covid-19 Drives Athens Hotel Prices Downward

The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is putting pressure on Athens hoteliers to lower their prices as all the more travelers from Greece’s main source markets prefer to cancel their holiday plans rather face Covid-19 measures.

According to a study carried out by YouGov on July 13-23, half of vacationers from Germany, the UK and France – among the country’s top five source markets – said they would prefer to cancel their holidays rather than undergo testing on arrival, quarantine on return, or wear masks outdoors.

At the same time, hotels in Athens have lowered their prices by 20 percent recording up to 10 percent occupancy levels compared to 95 percent last year while seasonal hotels are seeing occupancy levels drop even further.

Trivago findings indicate a year on year drop in prices in all European capitals with the largest declines recorded in Barcelona (down by 30 percent from 141 euros to 99 euros), Amsterdam (by 30 percent from 140 euros to 98 euros), Dublin (by 27 percent from 164 euros to 119 euros) and Reykjavik (by 25 percent from 156 euros to 117 euros).
