Covid-19: Greece Sees Passenger Numbers Down 68% in Jan-Oct

Greece’s airports recorded a decline in passenger traffic in the first 10 months of the year amid the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, according to data released on Wednesday the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA).

“The flight restrictions, which have been imposed as part of protection measures to address the spread of Covid-19, have a negative impact on the global aviation industry, which also affects Greece,” the HCAA said.

During the January-October 2020 period, the total number of passengers handled at Greek airports reached only 18.9 million, showing a 68 percent drop compared to 59 million passengers recorded in the corresponding period of 2019.

Flights at the country’s airports during that period amounted to 220,602, of which 106,346 were domestic and 114,256 international, showing a 45 percent decrease against the same period last year, when 401,317 flights were operated.

According to HCAA data, passenger traffic at all Greek airports showed a decline for the eighth consecutive month.

The figures released on the passenger traffic at Greek airports for October 2020 show that only 2,278,650 passengers were handled at the country’s airports, marking a 59.7 percent decrease compared to 2019 when 5,650,541 were handled.

The total number of flights that month amounted to 24,928, recording a drop of 45.3 percent, compared to the same period last year, when 45,552 flights were operated.

The number of arrivals of foreign passengers in Greece in October reached 733,177, down by 60.9 percent compared to 2019, when 1,873,245 passengers had arrived.
