New Archaeological Museum to Open in Ermionida, Greece

The Greek Culture Ministry recently announced plans to open a new archaeological museum in Ermionida, a municipality located in eastern Peloponnese.

Details for the museum’s establishment were discussed during an online meeting between Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, Ermionida Mayor Ioannis Georgopoulos, Argolis Ephorate of Antiquities Director Alkistis Papadimitriou and M. V. Vardinoyannis Foundation President Marianna Vardinoyannis.

The project began in 2018 when the Ermionida Municipal Council decided to donate the neoclassical building of the former city hall to the Culture Ministry for its conversion into a museum.

The neoclassical building is adjacent to the remains of the early Christian basilica.

Once completed, Ermionida’s museum will showcase significant monuments, display select ancient artifacts found in the area after excavations and provide information through digital applications.

According to Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, the new museum is expected to become a significant center of economic and tourism development for the region but also an exemplary educational center for its residents.

The studies for the building’s restoration and transformation into a museum have been undertaken by Marianna Vardinoyannis, who was born in Ermionida, in collaboration with the municipality.

“Ermioni is a place with a long history and great archaeological value which will be highlighted with the aim to ensure – for Ermionida and the greater region – the historical continuity that each place needs to create a better tomorrow,” Vardinoyannis said.
