The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) recently signed a memorandum of cooperation with the University of Thessaly to support tourism development through scientific research and studies.

As part of the memorandum, the Laboratory of Economic Policy and Strategic Planning of the University’s Department of Economic Sciences will conduct detailed research, design actions and create tools that will help support tourism development and promote the sector in domestic and international markets.

“The synergies with public and private bodies, which creatively contribute to strengthening the image of Greece as a tourism destination, are key parameters of the organization’s strategy,” GNTO President Angela Gerekou said during an online meeting with University of Thessaly Vice Rector Ioanna Laliotou.

“In order to promote the country as an international culture destination with special features, it is very important to collaborate with bodies whose activities can contribute to the promotion of tourism and the interaction with local communities,” she added.

Through the collection of data, the GNTO is looking to manage the needs of inbound and domestic tourism, create modern campaigns, establish a registry for the country’s tourism professionals and a digital map, as well as promote products and generate information for today’s visitors.

According to Gerekou, the GNTO collects data through scientific bases in collaboration with organizations and Greek and foreign universities.

Aiming to create a data-driven organization, the GNTO continues its collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Policy.
