Speaking during Friday’s Covid-19 media briefing, Greek infectious diseases expert Gkikas Magiorkinis said the ministry is now adding free random sample tests for the public to its strategy, following the establishment of rapid tests, in order to protect all citizens and break the chain of coronavirus transmission. According to Magiorkinis, the new platform is expected to help improve the epidemiological state of the country and control the spread of Covid-19. Scheduled to launch on December 21, the platform will be accessible through the website testing.gov.gr. Those interested in getting tested for the coronavirus can fill out an online application form and then wait to be chosen by the system at random. Those selected will receive an sms on their cell phone with useful information for their appointment (which testing site to visit and the time). The first group of 12,000 people selected at random will be notified via sms on Saturday, December 26, with the first appointments taking place on Monday, December 28. Magiorkinis said that the platform is open to all, but underlined that those already symptomatic of Covid-19 should contact their doctor or a hospital immediately. “These random sample tests are aimed at potential asymptomatic carriers and not at people who already have symptoms of the virus,” he said.
