Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport (AIA) significantly dropped by 68.4 percent in 2020, compared to 2019, as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and its impact on air travel.

According to data released by AIA, the airport received a total of 8.08 million passengers in 2020, from 25.57 million in 2019, as a result of a sharp drop in arrivals during the March – December period.

The number of international travelers in 2020 dropped by 71.6 percent at 5 million from 17.82 million in 2019, while domestic traffic decreased by 61.1 percent and reached 3 million passengers instead of 7.75 million the previous year.

December was yet another month substantially affected by the Covid-19 health crisis and its impact on air travel. Greece’s second national lockdown severely affected passenger traffic which dropped by 85.6 percent to approximately 236 thousand passengers instead of 1.63 million in December 2019.

Domestic and international passenger traffic decreased by 80.1 percent and 87.7 percent, respectively.
