T+L Places Tinos Among 6 Greek Destinations Where Greeks Love to Go

Tinos is among the six favorite destinations of Greek travelers due to its rich culture, unique gastronomy and local products, according to a recent article published in the online edition of the Travel + Leisure (T+L) magazine.

Titled “6 Greek destinations where the locals love to go”, the article shares the top travel destinations in the country according to the preferences of Greek vacationers. The list also includes Mount Pilion, Kimolos, Mount Olympos, Metsovo and Lefkada.

“The Greeks know how to do many things well, but after living here for three years, I’m convinced that they are actually the world’s best vacationers,” T+L journalist Sarah Souli says.

Tinos is a popular religious destination for Greeks due to its stunning Panagia Evangelistria church. Every Easter, worshipers crawl on their hands and knees from the port to the church as part of the pilgrimage.

According to Souli, during the last years, there has also been a food and wine renaissance on the island. Tinian products – particularly grapes and artichokes – are well known.

“The destination is especially popular from April through October, when Greeks come to spend their summer holiday, enjoying activities like swimming, hiking through the granite boulder-strewn landscape, and of course, eating,” she adds.

Tinos reveals its alternative tourism side

Meanwhile, the Municipality of Tinos is promoting the island’s unique gastronomy and special tourism experiences through a special campaign and coordinated actions including the Tinos Food Paths culinary event.

According to Deputy Mayor for Tourism Evgenia Alimonou, Tinos’ promotion strategy is in line with the current trends of the international tourism market.

“During these special circumstances, travelers seek for ways to connect with nature. Unexplored destinations and thematic experiences are an opportunity for the island,” she said.

Aiming to promote its alternative tourism side, Tinos invites travelers to visit its 52 traditional villages, and experience local art, tradition and flavors.

Furthermore, visitors can connect with nature through various activities including running, hiking, cycling, rock climbing and surfing.

In addition, a recenty launched smartphone application offers information to hikers abouth Tinos’ 13 thematic trails.
