Covid-19 Impact on tourism economy Greek Ports See 95% Drop in Cruise Passenger Arrivals in 2020 by GTP editing team 9 February 2021 written by GTP editing team 9 February 2021 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 10 Cruise ship arrivals and passenger visits to Greek ports recorded a significant drop by 95 percent in 2020, compared to the year before, as a result of the travel restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the Hellenic Ports Association (ELIME) announced on Tuesday. “The measures adopted on a global level to curb the Covid-19 pandemic have had and continue to have social and financial consequences in all activity sectors,” ELIME said in an announcement. According to the association, the measures also affected cruise travel – a sector which in previous years had “a significant performance and a promising future”. According to ELIME, in 2020 the number of cruise ship arrivals reached only 202 against 3,899 in 2019. Cruise passenger visits in 2020 dropped to 64,356 from 5,537,500 the year before. “This equals to a drop of over 95 percent for both indicators,” ELIME said. The association expressed its hope and wish for the gradual recovery of all financial sectors in 2021.
