Covid-19: Wider Athens Goes High Risk Red on ECDC Map 

The region of Attica in Greece, which includes the wider Athens area, has been labeled “red” on the weekly European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) Covid-19 map updated every Thursday.

Attica Region is labeled “high risk” indicated by the red color on the map, which charts the spread of the coronavirus and which is based on European Commission guidelines. Areas listed in the red category are reporting 150 or more positive Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people. 

According to the National Public Health Organization (EODY), Greece recorded 1,327 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours – 676 of which in Attica –  and 22 new deaths. It should be noted that the Greek government has imposed stricter lockdown measures on Attica since February 11.

The rest of Greece on the ECDC’s map is considered “medium risk” and labeled orange with the Epirus region to the north as “low risk” in green.

This week’s map is based on a combined index of tests, new cases, and positivity rate for the February 4 -11 period.

Low risk in Europe are Iceland and three regions of Norway.

Besides Greece, listed medium risk this week are Denmark, the rest of Norway, and an area in northern Italy. The rest of Europe – Britain, Switzerland, Balkan countries, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia excluded and not assessed – is considered high risk by the ECDC.

Last week, the Ionian islands, including such popular tourist destinations as Corfu, Kefalonia and  Zakynthos, were labeled “green”. 

Greece is still listed “low risk” (green) in terms of positivity rate (map below) compared to the rest of Europe which is orange.
