The Green Key is a leading certification which recognizes environmental responsibility and promotes eco-friendly technologies and sustainable operation methods. The program considers environmental management and education as paramount for the sustainability of hospitality enterprises, their staff, visitors, suppliers and the society. Every year, thorough inspections are conducted by the Green Key program’s operators: the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which consists of 65 environmental organizations in 57 countries and the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature. “Lets not forget that Greece is located in the climate-sensitive region of the Mediterranean that is already impacted by climate change. With respect and sensitivity for the environment, we try to assist efforts to mitigate the phenomenon by investing in effective, compatible methods which help save energy and natural resources,” the hotel’s management said in an announcement. Actions The Mediterranean Palace Hotel is implementing the following actions: It works with authorized organizations to recycle materials such as paper, glass, batteries, light bulbs, used soaps and appliances It is running a program for the treatment and disposal of waste and used oils For 2021 it plans to participate in tree-planting initiatives in collaboration with the Municipality of Thessaloniki It has trained its staff accordingly on energy- and resource saving practices It is constantly adapting the operation of its facilities to new, eco-friendly technologies It uses only LED bulbs and motion detection sensors in public areas Its rooms feature switches with on/off sensors for the operation of the air conditioning units, as well as photocell taps that mix water with air for low water consumption An electric car charging station is available, while the hotel encourages visitors to use public transport and bicycles. “Sustainable development is the basis of all our actions… Our environmental policy is formed by our aim to achieve the continuous improvement of our ecological footprint through the reduction of the ecological effect of the hotel’s operation,” the Mediterranean Palace said.
