Greece: Medea Weather System Causes Disruption to Ferry Travel

Ferry travel in Greece is facing disruption due to snow and strong winds reaching speeds of 10 Beaufort brought by the weather system dubbed “Medea”.

The Coast Guard has imposed a ban on ferry travel to the Aegean from the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio since yesterday. Itineraries of the hydrofoils for Poros are also not running, while the connections Pachi Megaron-Faneromeni Salamina and Ag. Marina-Nea Styra remain closed.

Passengers that have plans to travel today are advised to contact local port authorities or travel agencies to find out any changes and modifications of itineraries that have been caused by adverse weather conditions.

Public transportation in Athens has also been disrupted.

Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) has warned that weather deterioration will continue throughout the day. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has strongly recommended for citizens to avoid unnecessary movement for the next hours.

“Medea” made its appearance on Saturday, February 13, in northern Greece before sweeping through the country with heavy snowfalls.
