Athens, Greece, will host the 66th Meeting of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Commission for Europe during June 2-4.

Considered an event of global interest, the meeting will aim to define priority actions and measures, which should be adopted at a pan-European level for the sustainable recovery of tourism from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

The 66th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Europe will include discussions on the opportunities and challenges that European and global tourism is called upon to face, in the light of the unprecedented health crisis.

“The choice of Greece as host destination, especially at this time, shows the confidence the UNWTO has in our country and also confirms how much Greece’s prestige has been upgraded worldwide,” Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis said.

According to the minister, Greece’s hard work for the safe opening of tourism last summer; for the management of the health crisis with innovative means; for the introduction of the digital certificate for each vaccinated person; and also for the persistent promotion of vaccination certificates (for travel) at an international level, have made Greece “a leading player” in the developments of the tourism industry.

UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili and Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis.

“With the organization of the 66th Meeting of the UNWTO Commission for Europe in Athens, our country will literally be at the center of decisive processes for the ‘next day’ (in tourism), after the pandemic,” Theoharis added.

During the meeting, a thematic conference entitled “Sustainable coastal and maritime tourism in the Mediterranean: Challenges and opportunities in the post-COVID era” will be held.

UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili, tourism ministers and distinguished representatives of the global tourism industry will address the meeting.
