Starting today, police will carry out tighter security checks along major highways, at toll points, and at ports in an attempt to curb intra-regional travel ahead of Orthodox Easter.

Previous Covid-19 restrictions were revised and published in the Government Gazette on Friday, and include limiting exceptions for domestic travel.

According to the latest measures, movement between regions is banned until May 10 at 6am.

Under the new rules, intra-regional travel will be allowed only for a certain time period and with relevant documentation proving that movement is necessary for work, funeral, medical purposes, visitation rights in cases of divorced parents.

“The checks will be intensified,” said government spokesperson Aristotelia Peloni, adding that an action plan will be in place from noon onwards”.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged citizens yet again to conform to the rules and reiterated that there will be strict security checks at city exit points, particularly out of Athens, and heavy fines for violators.

Drivers failing to provide relevant documentation will be fined 300 euros and turned back.
