Delta Air Lines: New Atlanta Service, More New York Flights to Athens, Greece

US carrier Delta Air Lines on Friday announced that it is resuming service to Athens, Greece, with three direct daily flights.

The airline will connect Athens International Airport (AIA) with two daily flights from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and one from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Athens’ connection with New York is expected to begin on May 28. The nonstop daily service will provide a convenient connection from 44 U.S. cities across Delta’s network.

Additionally, Delta will launch new daily nonstop service to Athens on July 2 from its biggest hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). Customers will have connection opportunities to ATL from 143 cities across the country. Delta last operated the route in 2011.

Flights will be operated on 293-seat Airbus A330 aircraft.

Greek tourism minister welcomes Delta back to Athens

Underlining the importance of the US market for Greek tourism, the country’s tourism minister, Harry Theoharis, welcomed Delta’s decision to further strengthen its presence in Greece with three daily flights to Athens.

“We welcome Delta Air Lines to Athens… Greece is a safe destination. All this time we have taken all the measures to have a safe, friendly and calm summer. I am very pleased that our ongoing talks have brought such a positive result,” the minister said, following a meeting in Atlanta with the airline’s president, Glen Hauenstein, and senior executives of the company.

“Customers are eager to reclaim their lives and for many that means traveling again,” Delta Air Lines Senior Vice President Joe Esposito said, adding that “outdoor-friendly destinations” like Greece are particularly in demand.

The Greek tourism minister is currently in the US as part of an awareness-raising effort ahead of Greece’s official opening to tourists in May with no quarantine requirement for vaccinated travelers or those with a negative PCR test.
