Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis accepted the Global Champion Award for Covid-19 Crisis Management during a special ceremony on the sidelines of the WTTC’s annual global summit, which is taking place in Cancun, Mexico. Theoharis said the award is an “extremely substantial and exceptional distinction”, establishing Greece as a model destination for the safe re-opening of tourism during the global health crisis. The Global Champion Award for Covid-19 Crisis Management certifies that Greece is a top tourist destination with exemplary implementation of health protocols, with original and innovative solutions, with an unparalleled level of care for every traveler, for every family or group of tourists,” said the Greek minister. “The Global Champion Award for Covid-19 Crisis Management rewards the entire Greek tourism industry. The WTCC recognizes the effort – the immense effort – with which employees, entrepreneurs and all those involved in the provision of tourism services have contributed to an unprecedented success for Greece,” he said. The minister underlined that Greek tourism professionals have succeeded in keeping the national tourism product alive during an unprecedented and extremely difficult period. “At the same time, we managed to keep alive the hope for millions of people around the world, proving in practice that health safety can be achieved… safety which can in turn make travel possible,” according to Theoharis. The minister went on to conclude that the WTTC award demonstrates that the ‘brand name Greece’ has not come to mean safety and carefree holidays by chance.
