The European Union is inviting people across its member states and beyond to celebrate Europe Day on May 9 through online activities and events.

Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe. It marks the anniversary of the historical “Schuman declaration“. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

To celebrate Europe Day, the EU institutions traditionally open their doors to the public, while local EU offices in Europe and all over the world organize a variety of activities and events for all ages.

Due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis, this year, the EU is inviting citizens from across Europe and the world to participate in its celebrations in a safe way, with physical or hybrid events and visits taking place where sanitary conditions allow it.

People can visit the Europe Day portal to find out more about the activities taking place in the Parliament, the Commission and the other EU institutions.

An interactive online space also allows visitors to play games, watch videos and test their EU general knowledge.

Furthermore, people can get inforamtion about the events taking place near them thanks to an EU interactive map.
