The Municipality of Athens recently began its announced renovation works to the lower part of Syntagma Square in the center of the Greek capital.

More specifically, the works concern interventions to the public space delimited by Filellinon, Karagiorgi Servias and Mitropoleos streets.

As underlined in an announcement, the municipality launched the works in the middle of August in order to cause the least possible disturbance in the movement of residents, visitors and vehicles.

The local authorities also informed that the works will not change the width of the road leading to Filellinon street and that the three lanes for cars will remain as they currently are. Moreover, commuters will continue to be serviced by bus and trolley lines at the existing stops.

“During the period which works shall be carried out, technical crews and municipal police will ensure the smooth and safe passing of those circulating, working and shopping in the wider area,” the municipality said, adding that easy access to the shops located in front of the lower square has been facilitated.

The municipality underlines that it is moving “step by step towards a well-studied, planned and fully coordinated, environmental, functional and aesthetic improvement of public spaces in Athens”.

The project will include the renovation of the lower part of the square, the expansion of pedestrian walkways, landscaping, the installation of smart road crossings, accessibility ramps, shaded areas, and lighting.

The interventions are expected to highlight the uniqueness of Syntagma Square, often referred to as the heart of Athens, the municipality said.

The aim of the municipality is to finish the square’s revamp in the next six months.
