Greece’s Covid-19 Rules for Domestic Travel to Change for the Unvaccinated

Unvaccinated people in Greece from next week will need a negative Covid-19 rapid antigen test result in order to travel between regions.

The rule, which will be in force until March 31, 2022, is among the series of measures announced by the Greek government to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) and to protect the public health system.

With regard to domestic travel (movement between regions), from September 13, anyone unvaccinated (age 12 and over) that wants to travel by plane, ferry, bus, or train will need to have a negative rapid antigen test as required documentation. The test must be performed within 48 hours before the time of travel. Travelers will have to upload their test results to the government’s website www.gov.gr to issue a certificate which they will have to print out (or save to their phone) and show when requested.

Only minors up to 12 years old (with date of birth before June 30, 2009) can travel with a negative self test result (that will have to be uploaded on the government’s website).

Unvaccinated travelers should know that only tests conducted at private health centers will be accepted. From September 13, unvaccinated individuals will not be allowed to get tested for Covid-19 by the mobile health teams of EODY that carry out free rapid tests to citizens.

A negative Covid-19 rapid antigen test result (performed within 48 hours before the time of travel) will be needed for going to and coming from destinations.

The measure will be strictly in force for unvaccinated people traveling domestic by plane, boat, bus, or train. Unvaccinated travelers moving in private cars will not need to have any from of documentation when traveling between regions.

More details are expected to be announced shortly before September 13.

Vaccinated individuals or people that have recovered from the coronavirus will need to have proof of vaccination (certificate) or prior infection (initial positive PCR test result or recovery certificate) with them when traveling domestic by plane, boat, bus, or train.

It is reminded that a number of new measures for admission to indoor spaces including restaurants and bars in Greece will also go into effect on September 13.
