The management and employees of AIA expressed their sorrow for the loss of the airport’s chairman, through the following announcement: “George Aronis, after many years and a very successful course in the banking field, took over as chairman of our Board of Directors in the summer of 2020, at the most dramatic and difficult time for Athens Airport. His love for the company and his trust in its people, his visionary approach, knowledge, experience and skills made us stronger in moments when the difficulties seemed too great to be overcome. His always supportive attitude made us more optimistic at times when the future seemed dark and ominous. He was especially loved by everyone for his ethos, kindness and authenticity.” Born in Athens in 1957, George Aronis started his career at ABN Amro where he served as general manager of consumer credit before leaving in 1999 to join the National Bank of Greece. In 2002 he became general manager of retail banking. In 2004, Aronis started working as head of retail banking at Alpha Bank. In 2008 he took over as general manager and in March 2017, he was appointed Deputy CEO responsible for retail banking, businesses, and the bank’s network abroad. During his last years at Alpha Bank, Aronis served as special advisor to the bank’s CEO Vassilis Psaltis. At the end of 2019 he resigned from the bank and in 2020 was appointed the new chairman of the Board of Directors at Athens International Airport (AIA). We, at GTP, extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and the people of AIA.
