Mitsis Hotels has joined forces with WWF Greece with the aim to contribute to the organization’s efforts to protect the environment.

The group recently announced its participation in WWF’s Hotel Kitchen initiative that aims to limit food waste in hotels. Through the program, Mitsis Hotels will also attempt to reduce the environmental footprint of its 17 hotel units.

Hotel Kitchen aims to establish working groups for the development of common strategies, train employees to actively contribute to the prevention and reduction of food waste, cooperate with local bodies, promote food donation programs and evaluate the effectiveness of its activities.

Mitsis Hotels will also participate in the voluntary Adopt a Beach program, which aims to eliminate single-use plastic, monitor coastal pollution and create a user-friendly open database.

“Information on the volume, composition, origin and seasonality of marine litter is a prerequisite for the improvement of environmental activities,” the group said.

Therefore, Mitsis Hotels will form special teams that will monitor, record and clean its nine blue-flag awarded beaches on Crete, Kos and Rhodes, as well as in Kammena Vourla, Central Greece.

“By joining the ‘Hotel Kitchen’ and ‘Adopt a Beach’ programs, we aspire to enrich our environmental program titled ‘LIFE’, which aims to reduce our ecological footprint, protect and promote biodiversity in our five destinations and raise awareness among our 3,500 employees and 350,000 visitors annually,” Mitsis Hotels CEO Stavros Mitsis said.

The group will soon publish the second edition of its 2020 Annual Social Report, which includes information on all its Corporate Social Responsibility activities and environmental practices.
