A number of neighborhoods in Athens are getting new sidewalks as part of the municipality’s efforts to improve the everyday life of residents, enhance safety and ensure better accessibility for people with disabilities.

Under a budget of 24 million euros, the municipality is going ahead with a two-year plan that includes the creation of 410 new sidewalks and works for the energy upgrade of Athens’ seven city districts.

Works for new sidewalks in Athenian neighborhoods are currently underway and include the usage of new environmentally friendly materials to control high temperatures and help fight global warming.

Apart from reconstruction and maintenance works, municipal crews are also widening the city’s sidewalks and planting trees in certain areas.

Already restored are the sidewalks of several streets in the 1st and 3rd city districts. The remaining four city districts are expected to see construction works in October.

It should be noted that a special municipal crew will oversee the restoration of special mobility ramps.

According to Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis, the municipality aims to create a more modern and friendly city, accessible to all.

“These modern sidewalks will let Athenians walk safely in the city and actually enjoy it. Our primary concern in this process is to ensure access for people with disabilities including the visually impaired. It is essential for them to be able to move around the city with confidence and safety,” he added.
