Matsouka The Municipality of Ancient Olympia announced this week that it would be launching a series of actions and initiatives to attract more travelers, extend duration of stay and boost revenues. The actions are aimed at restoring the region’s reputation which was impacted by the Covid-19 crisis and tainted by the devastating fires last summer. In this direction, the municipality’s tourism committee in collaboration with tourism consultants MTC Group are working on an action plan that focuses on redefining the region through innovative products and the integration of modern technologies. Local tourism stakeholders are counting on cruise arrivals to contribute after Norwegian Cruises launched home porting activities in Greece this year. Ancient Olympia authorities are currently in talks with cruise company representatives to include site seeing, shopping, nature treks and other products in shore excursions. Ancient Olympia Mayor George Georgiopoulos also met with tour operators and journalists to brief them on upcoming projects and actions. The traditional ceremony is scheduled to take place at Ancient Olympia on October 18 without spectators due to Covid. The flame will be handed over to Beijing organizers during a second ceremony on October 19 at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens.
