Attica Region and CIVINET Greece-Cyprus Join Forces for Circular Tourism 

The Attica Region announced this week that it had secured funding through its partnership with the CIVINET Greece-Cyprus network to implement a circular tourism strategy in eight of its island/coastal municipalities.

More specifically, the seven Attica island municipalities of Agistri, Aegina, Kythira, Poros, Salamina, Spetses, and Hydra and the coastal municipality of Trizinia-Methana will be the first to be covered under an agreement signed between Attica Regional Governor Giorgos Patoulis and Founder & Coordinator at CIVINET Greece-Cyprus, Kosmas Anagnostopoulos.

The region of Attica was selected first among 14 nominations from four Mediterranean countries to participate in the InCircle Project, an Interreg MED Program initiative. The program offers support for the promotion of circular tourism economy strategies in the post-pandemic era.

Funds will go toward sustainable development and circular tourism initiatives including water resources management, energy saving, green waste management, and environmentally-friendly mobility, with the overall aim to improve the quality of life for both residents and tourists.

“A new project begins today which will add value to the Attica brand as a popular travel destination all year round,” said Patoulis, adding that policy-making and strategies will now focus on ways to address climate change over the next decade.

“We are paving the way for the implementation of good practices that will enable us to offer better services to travelers, limit the ecological footprint created by increasing visitor flows, while at the same time significantly reducing water and energy waste,” he said.

CIVINET Greece-Cyprus is a network of public authorities in Greece and Cyprus active in promoting sustainable mobility; a national multiplier of ELTIS, and a key partner of the Urban Transports Community of Interreg MED.
