GNTO Presents Greece Tourism Options at Copenhagen Travel Fair

Demand for Greece among Danish travelers is strong, according to feedback collected by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) following participation this week in the Quality Travel Fair held in Copenhagen.

The GNTO participated in the first in-person exhibition after Covid welcoming  thousands of visitors who expressed interest in traveling to Greece. At the same time, event organizer Vagabond magazine featured Greece in its October issue available to guests.

According to the GNTO, top reasons for travel among the Danes are wellness, gastronomy & wine, cycling and hiking. The majority of potential travelers are in the 60+ age group and are repeat travelers seeking crowd-free destinations.

Denmark is an up-and-coming source market for Greece. Indicatively, a total of 389,243 Danes visited Greece in 2016, said the GNTO, and through to pre-Covid 2019, the figure reached 492,266 arrivals or 8.44 percent of the country’s population. Between 2016 and 2019, the number of travelers from Denmark to Greece increased by 26.46 percent. 

Covid inevitably led to a decline in 2020 to 118,477 arrivals from Denmark which, however, still accounted for 50 percent of total arrivals (247,837) from Scandinavian countries, the GNTO said.

More than 60 exhibitors from 12 countries including Portugal, Cyprus, the Philippines, the Faroe Islands, Jamaica, Croatia, Poland, Czech Republic, Thailand, Tunisia, and Sweden participated in this year’s Quality Travel Fair. 

As part of its ongoing strategy for the 2022 season, the GNTO’s Scandinavia branch will be promoting Greece in local media, arranging promotional events, and discussing the possibility of conference tourism activities.

Earlier this year, the GNTO organized the “Greece Open” – four professional golf tournaments in Denmark, aiming to promote Greece’s state-of-the-art golf resorts to Danish tour operators.
