Athens Airport Passes 10 Million Passenger Mark in Jan-Oct

Athens International Airport (AIA) is seeing a gradual growth in passenger traffic although numbers are still lagging behind compared to 2019.

According to data released on Thursday, passenger traffic numbers reached the 10 million mark at Athens Airport during the 10-month January-October 2021 period, exceeding the respective 2020 levels by 32.2 percent.

However, passenger traffic numbers are down by 55 percent compared to 2019.

During the first 10 months of the year, domestic passengers exceeded the 2020 levels by 34 percent and international passengers by 31.2 percent, but lagged well behind 2019 levels by 44.3 percent and 59.7 percent respectively.

October 2021

In October alone the airport’s passenger traffic amounted to 1.62 million and continued to be substantially affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic crisis and its impact on air travel.

AIA said the airport’s passenger traffic was below the respective October 2019 levels by 29.6 percent, signifying overall the progressive recovery observed since June.

In the domestic market, traffic was below the respective 2019 levels by 20.5 percent, while in the international sector, passenger demand presented a 33.4 percent decline vs the corresponding 2019 traffic.

Flights

Athens International Airport’s number of flights during the first ten months of 2021 amounted to 131.8 thousand, and, although exceeding the respective 2020 numbers by 30.9 percent, they were below the 2019 levels by 33 percent, severely impacted by flight cancellations due to the Covid-19 crisis.

More specifically, both domestic and international flights, although exceeding the corresponding 2020 levels by 33.4 percent and 28.8 percent respectively, remained below the 2019 levels by 25.4 percent and 38.5 percent respectively.
