Covid-19 Impact on tourism economy Arrivals in Greece Jump by 69% in January-October by GTP editing team 22 November 2021 written by GTP editing team 22 November 2021 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 15 Photo source: Shutterstock Airports across Greece reported a 69 percent increase in traffic flows between January and October 2021 compared to the same 10-month period in 2020 but still down by 45.7 percent over pre-pandemic 2019, according to data released by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA). In October, passenger traffic grew by 118.1 percent with international arrivals up 126.9 percent compared to the same month in 2020. More specifically, a total of 32 million travelers went through Greek airports marking a 69 percent rise over 2020 and 18.96 million passengers, the HCAA said. At the same time, from January to October, the number of flights increased by 45.9 percent against the same period in 2020 to 339,187 flights: 138.344 domestic flights and 200,843 international. In the 10-month 2020 period, Greek airports handled 232,442 flights in total. When compared however to pre-Covid-19 January-October figures, flights were down by 29.2 percent while passenger traffic was weaker by 45.7 percent over 59,069,514 arrivals in 2019. The HCAA goes on to report that October arrivals from abroad showed a robust comeback, up by 126.9 percent with the number of flights stronger by 74.6 percent. In October, a total of 1,683,723 travelers came to Greece over 741,932 in 2020 while the number of flights grew by 74.6 percent to 45,771 compared to 26,208 in the same month in 2020. Total passenger traffic came to 4,994,121 in October up by 118.1 percent compared to the same month in 2020 (2,290,132 passengers). Compared to pre-crisis 2019, international passenger arrivals are still down by 10.1 percent and total traveler flows by 11.6 percent.
