The highway reopened to traffic on Thursday morning after remaining closed for almost three days as a result of the “Elpis” winter snowstorm that hit many parts of Greece, including Attica, on Monday. According to reports, more than 2,000 cars and over 4,500 individuals were trapped on the highway for many hours on Monday and Tuesday due to the heavy snowfall. Attiki Odos S.A. said the toll-free measure aims to facilitate drivers who enter the highway from surrounding roads that still face traffic problems. It is noted that abandoned vehicles on Attiki Odos have been transferred from the highway to a special parking area at Athens International Airport (behind the IKEA and Kotsovolos stores) where owners can claim them. In order to help car owners get to the airport and claim their vehicles, Attiki Odos S.A. and the General Secretariat for Civil Protection have arranged for a transfer service between 9am – 7pm from the junction of Kifissias Avenue with Attiki Odos (the so-called “dachtilidi” area).
