Four thousand trees were recently planted in the fire-hit area of Limni Evias on the island of Evia, as part of two pilot forest regeneration projects carried out by local authorities in collaboration with the Greek Environment Ministry and the private sector.

The reforestation activities took place in February and saw the participation of high school students, residents, members of the Hellenic Fire Service and local agricultural organizations.

The first project involved the reforestation of a total area of 51 stremmas (12.6 acres) with 3,000 trees including pines, cypresses and carobs. The project budget of 48,650 euros was covered by the reforestation’s contractor Eren Groupe SA.

The second project took place by the forest service of Limni Evias on a voluntary basis and included the planting of another 1,000 trees through a donation made by the We4all environmental organization.

During an inspection visit to northern Evia, Deputy Environment Minister Giorgos Amyras participated in the reforestation activities by planting the first tree.

He also inspected the anti-corrosion and anti-flood works carried out at Limni Evias.

“The Greek government fulfills its commitment to restore the areas of Northern Evia affected by the catastrophic fires. The ministry of environment has also completed anti-corrosion projects in record time, while major anti-flood works are already underway,” he said.
