Photo source: Culture Ministry The Greek Culture Ministry has announced a 42-million-euro project for the protection, preservation and promotion of archaeological sites and cultural monuments on the Dodecanese islands. The project – to be financed by the Recovery Fund – includes works on a number of sites dating back to Medieval, Byzantine and Ottoman times that are located on the islands of Rhodes, Kos, Leros, Halki, Kalymnos, Symi and Agathonisi. During an inspection visit on Rhodes, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni announced the launch of preservation works in the Medieval city. The project foresees the promotion of the archaeological site of Pervola through the connection of its ancient remains with the medieval gardens of Kastelo and the creation of an integrated 4.9-acre historic center in the heart of the Medieval settlement. Photo source: Culture Ministry Other projects on Rhodes include: – restoration works at the National Theater; the Neoclassical School of the Medieval City; Ottoman, Medieval and Roman monuments and the mansion of Hassan Bey – the creation of an open-air museum at the Medieval port, and – the maintenance, restoration and promotion of the Rejep Pasha mosque. Photo source: Culture Ministry The ministry will also proceed with a number of projects on the following islands: Kos – Restoration of the Neratzia Castle; medieval fortifications and sections on Ippokratous st; the early Christian baptistery of Agios Ioannis; the Defterdar mosque and the Purification Fountain. – Reconstruction of an Italian arcade and the creation of an open-air sculpture gallery at Nerantzia Castle. Kalymnos – Restoration of Venetian windmills. Leros – Restoration of a former hotel in Lakki. Symi island, Greece Symi – Restoration of the bell tower of the church of Aghios Ioannis Prodromos. Halki – Restoration of Panagia Horiani Church. – Works at the Archaeological Museum.
