Regional authorities in Western Greece have launched a digital mobile museum in the town of Kalavryta to promote the destination’s history and culture.

Hosting archive material and information that highlight the area’s contribution to the 1821 Greek War of Independence, the digital museum launched with funds of 1.96 million euros from the Western Greece 2014-2020 Operational Program

The museum uses digital audiovisual technologies that include video screenings, interactive applications, digital representations, virtual reality apps, audio and multimedia tour systems.

“Apart from keeping memories alive, the digital museum will also attract more visitors to the area of Kalavryta,” Western Greece Governor Nektarios Farmakis said.

The governor also announced that the new museum would tour 10 cities in Western Greece, namely Agrinio, Egio, Amaliada, Kalavryta, Vonitsa, Krestena, Messolongi, Nafpaktos, Patrasand Pyrgos.

Following the tour, the museum will be divided into two sections: the first will permanently return to Kalavryta while the second will be on display in the city of Mesolongi.

According to Western Greece Deputy Governor Andreas Filias the digital museum “resembles a park” where visitors can interact with its exhibits, games, 3D images, digital books and virtual reality apps.

“This infrastructure promotes our region’s history and culture… and offers significant development perspectives especially in the field of tourism,” he said.
