In efforts to increase the use of bicycles for transportation and recreation, the Mayor of Rethymno, Crete, George Marinakis announced the city’s first “Bike Friendly Days” event to be held on April 26-30.

The event, organized jointly with NatTour, a nonprofit organization promoting sustainable tourism practices, aims to encourage the use of bicycles as an active step towards sustainable mobility.

The event follows Rethymno’s recent certification as a Bike Friendly destination and coincides with the PPC Cycling Tour of Greece, which will begin from Crete.

Aiming to be a frontrunner in sustainable mobility, environmental protection, energy savings and as part of efforts to strengthen sports tourism, the municipality of Rethymno aims to establish the week-long event which will be dedicated to cycling and include awareness-raising and educational actions, environmental and recreational activities for adults and children, gastronomy and culture tours.

All events will be posted on the city’s online guide here.

Underlining the importance of finding solutions to environmental challenges such as climate change, Mayor Marinakis said that “Rethymno has served sustainable mobility with absolute consistency and has invested in sustainable tourism”.

Deputy Rethymno Mayor for Tourism, Pepi Biliraki referred to the potential of cycling tourism and how it can contribute to the extension of the tourism season as well as enhance the overall tourist experience of Rethymno.
