The debut flights of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays to Athens took place on Thursday from two of the companies UK bases – Manchester and Birmingham Airports, marking the first time the tour operator has operated to the Greek capital.

Customers on the flights received a special welcome when they touched down at Athens International Airport (AIA), with special cakes, sweet treats and celebrations including a ribbon bonding to celebrate the connection between Athens and both UK cities.

The full flights marked the start of the leisure airline and city break specialist operating to the capital of Greece, with two weekly services available from each airport (Manchester and Birmingham) – on Thursdays and Sundays – until the end of October.

It is noted that Jet2 is the only company to offer a direct service to Athens from Birmingham.

“With international travel returning to normality, we are looking forward to our biggest and busiest ever summer in Greece, including the launch of flights and city breaks to Athens,” Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said.

According to Heapy, there is great demand from customers for flights and city breaks to Athens and he looks forward to a very successful programme this summer.

“We are looking forward to a fantastic summer and beyond as Greece continues to be right at the heart of our ongoing growth and success strategy,” he added.

On her part, AIA Communications & Marketing Director Ioanna Papadopoulou welcomed the airline’s “premiere” in the Athens market and thanked the company for its vote of trust.

“The UK is one of our most important markets and we are absolutely certain that not only will our vibrant city meet but it will even surpass the travelling public’s expectations, forming a sound base for the airline’s further growth and development in our airport,” she said.

Jet2.com is the third largest registered airline in the UK.

Similar flights to Athens from Newcastle and Edinburgh would also be very much appreciated by those of us living within a reasonable travel distance from these two airports.
