The legendary WWII Hotel Leros located in the Lakki area (Porto Lago), will be redeveloped into a multi-purpose cultural space and include a 20-room municipal guest house for artists, a ticket selling point for cultural events and archaeological sites, and an open-air cinema. The Leros Hotel and theater, also known as “Albergo Roma”, first opened in 1938. The two buildings were later designated by the culture ministry as historical monuments and as significant examples of Italian and mid-war architecture, important for the study of the history of architecture in the area of Lakki. The restoration works, budgeted at 2.1 million euros, will be funded through resilience and recovery resources as part of the ministry’s national development program. The project comes under the 2021-2027 agreement for Cultural Development between the culture ministry, the South Aegean Region and the Municipality of Leros, and includes besides the redevelopment of the Hotel Leros, studies as well as other cultural projects for the island budgeted at 2.3 million euros.
