INSETE: Airline Seat Capacity on Flights to Greece Increasing by the Day

The planned total seat capacity airlines to Greece expect to offer in the first 12 days of June has reached 1.5 million, according to INSETE, the research body of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE).

Based on data compiled by INSETE’s recovery tracker, 1.5 million airline seats have been booked for the first 12 days of June with the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Netherlands forming the top 5 source markets. International travelers are headed to Athens, Heraklion, Rhodes, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Kos, Chania, Santorini, Zakynthos and Mykonos.

Greece is also counting on travelers from the US this year thanks to an increasing number of direct flights on offer. Currently there are 15,000 booked airline seats for Greece per week through to mid-June.

The recovery tracker is a free tool that compiles tourism data including international and domestic arrivals, seat capacity on international and domestic air routes, hotel searches, and tracks the Greek tourism sector’s post-Covid-19 recovery. The data comes on the back of similar increases in May airline seat figures.

According to INSETE, airline seat capacity on incoming international flights to Greece is increasing by the day for both the traditional peak season in July and August but also for September. 

At the same time, more hotels across Greece are seeing occupancy levels rise with the average coming to 45 percent in the first two week of May. Travelers also appear to be spending more with Bank of Greece data for March indicating a 17 percent increase in average spending to 463 euros compared to 405 euros the same period in pre-crisis 2019.

The data of INSETE’s recovery tracker is the result of partnerships with, among others, the Bank of Greece, the Civil Aviation Authority, Athens International Airport, Fraport Greece and Sojern.
