Seven major projects are set to give Athens a new image and improve the standard of living in and around the Greek capital, according to the presentations of the “Urban Regeneration and Smart Cities” event held at the 5th ITC 2022 Infrastructure & Transportation Conference.

Among others, Attica Governor Giorgos Patoulis announced that 500 million euros would be going into projects for the region and that the redevelopment of the Faliro Delta on the coast was entering the next phase.

Additionally, urban regeneration plans for 127 neighborhoods in Athens, including restoration of schools, public buildings, and Syntagma Square, the expansion of pedestrian walkways and main roads, and the construction of the new Panathinaikos stadium in Votanikos are scheduled to be completed by 2025

At the same time, Athens’ “Prosopsi” program subsidizing the restoration of building facades as well as newly running schemes funding energy upgrades for public buildings are underway.

During the event, Lamda Development, behind the Ellinikon project along the Athenian Riviera, presented its plans for the implementation of a “Smart Cities” program.

“We want Hellinikon to become a global example of a smart city. The infrastructure and software that we will develop there are aimed at improving the quality of life of citizens,” said Chief Investment Officer Lamda Development Theodoros Gavriilidis.

Mytilineos Group also announced that it would be going ahead with its own Smart Cities scheme at Aspra Spitia in Viotia, Central Greece.

Speaking during the event, Attica Governor Giorgos Patoulis underlined the importance of coordination and setting priorities. “Proper prioritization of investments and reforms is required in order for RRF resources to have a direct effect on the economy and employment and to have a high growth multiplier.”
