A part of the Greece’s GReco Islands initiative, Deloitte’s new study will attempt to develop interventions and innovations towards energy and climate neutrality, circular economy, resource efficiency, as well as to highlight the islands’ natural and cultural capital, biodiversity and sea interconnection for the benefit of both residents and visitors. “Deloitte’s strategic plan aims to act as a guide for the sustainable development of all Greek islands and is no less than an emblematic project for both us and the islands that will become the center of global attention as, not only beautiful but also sustainable and autonomous destinations,” the company said on social media. Deloitte’s proposals will include necessary interventions for the preservation and promotion of the islands’ natural environment and biodiversity. The study will also look into ways to enhance the interconnection of the islands, support the tourism development of their unique cultural heritage and promote local products. In addition, the Deloitte study will focus on the islands’ digital transformation through the promotion of digital services, such as e- learning and telemedicine, and seek for ways to promote their sustainable interconnection through electric/hybrid ferries. “Plans of the GReco Islands initiative are expected to serve as a guide for the promotion of sustainable development on the islands, through a holistic plan for the transition to a sustainable future, with innovations and solutions in a number of areas, that are significant for the development of these islands,” Deloitte Strategy and Operations Principal Sotiris Batzias said. The project will be carried out as part of the EU’s National Strategic Reference Framework 2014 -2020 scheme (also known as ESPA). The GReco Islands initiative launched last year with the aim to kickstart the energy-saving transition of Greece’s islands. In early June, Deloitte agreed to support the Municipality of Chalki in its efforts to increase the population on the remote Greek island.
