One of the world’s largest birdwatching fairs, Global BirdFair this year hosted a total of 250 exhibitors from 40 countries as well as 12,000 visitors. Central Macedonia presented the national parks of Kerkini, Axios-Aliakmonas-Loudias and Koronia-Volvi at the stand of Greece’s Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency that attracted hundreds of visitors from all over the world. During the Global BirdFair, British travelers also showed their interest in the area of Kerkini lake, which every year receives repeat visitors. They were also impressed by the region’s local products such as feta cheese, buffalo meat from Kerkini and akanes (a kind of sweet similar to loukoumi) from Serres. “Central Macedonia’s aquatic ecosystems are destinations with unique characteristics that offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy special outdoor activities,” Deputy Governor responsible for tourism Alexandros Thanos said. “Birdwatchers and nature lovers travel during all seasons, therefore we see the number of travelers to the area increasing every year. In addition, Central Macedonia attracts many repeat visitors,” he added.
