Culture Museums in Ioannina, Heraklion and Metsovo Get Certification by GTP editing team 25 July 2022 written by GTP editing team 25 July 2022 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 15 Ioannina Silversmithing Museum Three Greek museums, located in the towns of Ioannina, Metsovo and on the island of Crete, recently received the “Certified Museum” label by the Culture Ministry. “The three museums added to the list of certified museums meet specific quality standards by implementing good practices in all areas of their operation, including the documentation and maintenance of their collections, as well as by ensuring financial viability to meet their goals,” Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said. The certification seal has been awarded to the Silversmithing Museum of Ioannina, a member of the museum network of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation; the Kazantzakis Museum located in the area of Myrtia in Heraklion, Crete; and the Evangelos Averoff Gallery in Metsovo. The “Recognized Museum” or “Certified Museum” label (depending on the legal status of each museum) is awarded to facilities that meet specific quality standards and apply good organizational and operational practices. The certification process is part of a broader collaboration between the ministry and museums, and is regularly renewed. “Through this certification system, the culture ministry provides private museums with the opportunity to become more inclusive and friendlier to the public,” Mendoni added. Ioannina Silversmithing Museum The Ioannina Silversmithing Museum is located in the southeastern side of the city’s landmark castle. Operating since 2016, it aims not only to showcase the work of the city’s craftsmen but also to archive and preserve the history of Epirote silver work which played a key role in the wider region’s economy and cultural identity. The museum is also a live cultural space that hosts exhibitions, seminars, educational programs and cultural events. Nikos Kazantzakis Museum Nikos Kazantzakis Museum, Crete The Nikos Kazantzakis Museum is located in the area of Myrtia, in Heraklion, Crete, and is dedicated to the life and work of the great Greek writer. The museum started its operation in 1983 and itsmission is to preserve and promote the work and memory of Nikos Kazantzakis on a national and international level. Evangelos Averoff Gallery Averoff Gallery, Metsovo The Evangelos Averoff Gallery in Metsovo was established in 1988 by Greek politician and author Evangelos Averoff Tositsas to house his collection that includes 200 works of Greek artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Since then, the gallery has been enriched with additional artwork while the building has become accessible to people with disabilities.
