Scheduled Air Capacity for Greece Stays Strong in September

Greece is expected to welcome over two million foreign arrivals by the first half of September, according to INSETE, the research body of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE).

Data provided by the body’s recovery tracker shows a drop in airline seat capacity on incoming international flights to Greece between August 29 and September 11 and then a rise for the week of September 12-18 .

INSETE’s recovery tracker is a free tool that compiles all relevant tourism data in one place, giving the ability to track the sector’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. The tracker includes data on international and domestic arrivals, seat capacity on international and domestic air routes and hotel searches.

The latest data of the recovery tracker shows that planned seat capacity on international incoming flights to Greece from August 29 until September 18 adds up to over 2 million, a number that clearly reflects the demand for Greece as a tourism destination.

The largest volume of planned seat capacity for Greece for the first two weeks of September is recorded by airlines in the United Kingdom and followed by carriers in Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Austria, Israel and Belgium.

Athens is expected to welcome the majority of Greece’s foreign visitors between August 29 and September 18, with over 720,000 travelers expected to land at the city’s airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”. The number is slightly less than the corresponding number of travelers during the same period in 2019.

Next expected to welcome large volumes of visitors to Greece during August 29-September 18 are the airports of Heraklion (Crete), Rhodes, Corfu, Thessaloniki, Kos, Chania (Crete), Santorini, Zakynthos and Mykonos.

It should be mentioned that data for October at the moment is highly encouraging, as planned airline seat capacity on international incoming flights is at 950,000, a figure higher when compared to the same month in 2019.
