Skoulas Athens’ Kolokotroni street, located in the city center, is among the world’s 33 coolest streets for 2022, according to a survey conducted by Time Out, a London-based media group aiming to inspire people explore and enjoy the best of cities worldwide. “Street life is what makes the places we live feel alive. Which makes streets kind of a big deal,” Time Out says. For its Time Out Index survey, the group asked more than 20,000 people the question: what’s the coolest street in your city? Local Time Out editors and contributors then narrowed down the selection to unveil the coolest streets on the planet right now. One of Athens’ busiest streets featuring commercial shops and a number of cafes, restaurants and bars, Kolokotroni street ranks 12th on the list. “On central Athens’ extraordinary Kolokotroni Street, independent stores jostle for attention and fun, and fresh resto-bars have laid down roots,” Time Out says. Papanikolatos Time Out’s experts suggest that visitors start their walk from the square and peek inside the National History Museum (which was once the Parliament building); then wander slowly down to Aiolou street admiring the neoclassical architecture; stop for a Greek salad, burger or Indian-influenced souvlaki, wash it all down with an ouzo or Freddo cappuccino; then head to some of the vendors selling sandals, books, clothes, art supplies, jewellery and vintage watches. The coolest street in the world, according to the Time Out Index, is Rue Wellington in Montreal. Gertrude Street in Melbourne ranks second and Great Western Road in Glasgow third.
