According to data released by AIA, during the last month of the summer holidays, Athens Airport welcomed 2.85 million passengers, which is 94 percent of the passenger numbers in August 2019 (which was a record month at the time). Domestic passengers approached the respective 2019 levels, lagging behind by only 0.6 percent, while international air travellers presented a single-digit decline of 8.5 percent vs 2019. January-August passenger traffic Overall, during the first eight months of 2022, the airport’s passenger traffic totalled 14.7 million, below the respective 2019 levels by 15.1 percent. Analytically, domestic passengers lagged behind the 2019 levels by 8.8 percent and international passengers by 17.9 percent, respectively. The growth in passengers compared to 2021 was high, as the total passenger traffic at Athens Airport recorded an increase of 121.2 percent year-on-year. Compared to 2021, Greece’s largest airport saw domestic traffic up by 83.7 percent and international traffic up by 145.9 percent. Flights Athens Airport’s number of flights during the first eight months of 2022 amounted to 142,548, i.e. 7.6 percent below the respective 2019 levels. Domestic flights slightly surpassed the pre-pandemic count by 0.7 percent, while international flights fell short of January-August 2019 by 13.7 percent. Compared to last year, aircraft movements at AIA during the first eight months of the year was up by almost 50 percent, with domestic flights up by 41.7 percent and international flights up by 56 percent.
